Track Events Explained: What Do Each of These Mean?
Runners:
- 100 Hurdles
- Ten hurdles are placed in 100 meters. You are using the form, lead to trail, to leap the hurdles.
- 100 Meter Dash
- A sprint race for 100 meters. This is roughly the length of one straightaway on the track.
- 4 x 200 Meter Relay
- 4 × 200 meters relay is an athletics track event in which teams comprise four runners who each complete 200 meters or half a lap. You are transferring the baton.
- 1600 Meter Run
- At exactly four laps of a normal 400 m track.
- 4 x 100 Relay
- The 4 × 100 meters relay or sprint relay is an athletics track event run in lanes over one lap of the track with four runners completing 100 meters each.
- 400 Meter Dash
- A sprint race for 400 meters, which is one lap around the field.
- 300 Hurdles
- You are using the form, lead to trail, to leap the hurdles for 300 meters.
- 800 Meter Run
- At exactly two laps of a normal 400 m track.
- 200 Meter Dash
- A sprint race for 200 meters which is half a lap.
- 4 x 400 Meter Relay
- A track event in which teams consist of four runners who each complete 400 meters or one lap by exchanging the baton.
- Shotput
- an athletic contest in which a very heavy round ball is thrown as far as possible.
- Discus.
- is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than his or her competitors
- High Jump
- is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern most practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing.
- Long Jump
- is a track and field event in which athletes combine speed, strength and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a take off point.
- Triple Jump
- is a track and field event, similar to the long jump. ... The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit.
