Quarter One: August - October 2020
Fall of 2020 will have a central unit focus on Social Justice. This topic will be explored by using our whole class novel, The Watson's Go To Birmingham. This historical fiction novel paired with informational texts will help students to explore literature. Students will learn critical thinking skills using a variety of comprehension strategies (i.e. questioning, monitoring, visualizing, inferencing, summarizing, using prior knowledge, determining importance) to read, comprehend, and analyze grade level appropriate texts.

Quarter Two: November 2020 - January 2021

Quarter Three: January 2021 - March 2021
Winter of 2021/Spring 2021 will have a central unit focus on Poetry. This topic will be explored by using our whole class novel, Crossover. We will work to understand concepts like author's purpose of writing, interpreting and understanding figurative language (focus on Allusions), writing poetry, understanding structure of poems, etc. We will create a writing piece, "Where I'm From" Poem to demonstrate our understanding of concepts learned in addition to creating a final project for Crossover based on literary skills we've learned as well.

Quarter Four: April 2021 -June 2021
In the Spring of 2021 our final unit focused on understanding author's purpose using the acronym P.I.E. (persuade, inform, entertain), reading/writing informational text, constructing short answer and extended response for text, creating on-demand written writing responses, understanding test taking strategies and coping strategies, interpreting text features (i.e. bars/charts/graphs), letter writing, and creating expository essays using a digital format.
